Medication

Regardless of how much support is needed by the person you’re caring for, having a medication management system is important. Setting up a medication schedule and adding reminders can help make sure you stay on track with medications.

Here are some tips:

  • Make medication management part of your daily routine with visual reminders like a pill box or notes on the fridge. Use audible alerts and visual cues if If you or the person you help have difficulty remembering.
  • Ask a friend or family member to check in at medication times.
  • Know what each medication looks like. This will help you confirm that the right medication was taken.
  • Do not put liquids or medications needing refrigeration in the pillbox. If the person you care for takes injections, talk to the doctor or pharmacist about the best way to store these. In general, avoid pre-filing syringes.
  • Keep medications in a safe place, away from children and pets, and in a location to prevent accidental overdoses.

Be sure to contact your care team if you notice new or worsening symptoms, or have any general concerns about the medication plan.
